Outdoor lighting
Wall lights by doors, PIR security lights, path lighting and feature lighting all make a garden safer and more usable. Outdoor fittings must be suitable for their location, with an appropriate IP rating, and outdoor circuits need RCD protection.
Some garden lighting runs at extra-low voltage through a transformer, which can be simpler to install in beds and borders. An electrician will recommend the best approach.
Outdoor sockets
A weatherproof outdoor socket saves running extension leads through windows for lawnmowers, pressure washers and power tools. It should be RCD-protected and fitted in a sensible position, usually on the house wall.

Power to sheds, garages and garden rooms
Supplying an outbuilding means running a suitably sized cable from the house – usually buried armoured cable or cable in ducting at a suitable depth – to a small consumer unit in the building. Garden rooms used as offices or gyms may need several circuits.
Costs and certification
Costs depend on distances, groundwork and fittings. New outdoor circuits are notifiable work in England and Wales, so you should receive a certificate. See our prices guide for indicative ranges.
