Plug-in or hard-wired?
Smaller 'plug and play' hot tubs run from a standard 13A socket, while larger tubs usually need a dedicated, hard-wired 32A supply. Check the manufacturer's requirements before buying – it makes a big difference to the installation.
Even plug-in tubs deserve a proper socket
A plug-in tub running for hours puts a sustained load on a socket. Many electricians recommend a dedicated outdoor socket on its own circuit with RCD protection, rather than an existing socket or an extension lead.

What a hard-wired installation involves
- A new circuit from the consumer unit, sized for the tub
- RCD protection
- A weatherproof isolator switch within sight of the tub
- Armoured cable or suitable protection along the route
- Testing and certification
Positioning
Electrical equipment needs to be positioned correctly relative to the tub, and the base must be able to take the weight. Tell your electrician where the tub will go before you pour a patio or slab.
